“Alma” – Valentine’s Day oil sketch
👩🎨 Studio thoughts:
I named this piece Alma, a Latin word often translated as nourishing, kind, or soul. It’s a word that’s often linked to the phrase alma mater, meaning “nourishing mother” or “fostering mother.” Historically, it was used to describe nurturing goddesses, and later became associated with places of learning and growth. I like how it carries that sense of care, support, and quiet encouragement.. For this Valentine’s, I wanted to explore love in its quietest form. Not just romantic love, but the deep, steady bond that nurtures and holds us.
In this mare and foal, there’s a softness in their closeness. I hope you can feel a sense of comfort and reassurance. That feeling felt central to this piece, given the foals little muzzle touching his mother and the name Alma seemed to capture it perfectly.
The colour palette was kept soft and warm, while still holding depth and detail through the layering and brushwork I lay.
