“Custos”- Valentines day oil sketch
👩🎨 Studio thoughts:
I named the piece Custos, which is a Latin word meaning guardian or protector. I was drawn to it for this reason because I hope the viewer can feel the quiet strength in the love between the two. This Valentine’s, I’m exploring all loves, not just romantic love. The kind of love that doesn’t need to announce itself, because it’s deeply rooted.
In this mare and foal painting, there’s a sense of staying close, of being held, guided, and kept safe. That relationship felt like the heart of this piece, and the name Custos seemed to capture it perfectly.
The colour palette was kept soft and warm, allowing space for a calm feeling whilst still holding depth and detail through the use of my brush markings.
