Original Colour Study "ἀλκή" (Alke)
“I'm happy to share this new piece with you. It's a study in watercolour, ink, coloured pencil and oil pastel, showing a horse mid-canter in a moment of movement and ease. I started it as a quick sketch study, but it slowly took on a life of its own. The colour palette came together naturally, giving the piece a quiet kind of energy, while the mark-making I did was somewhat a reflection of a dappled grey.
I’ve been thinking a lot about strength lately, not the loud kind, but the type that’s calm, steady, and grounded. Horses have consistently held that balance for me. They move with power, but there’s softness too. A kind of quiet awareness.
This piece is called ἀλκή (Alke) - a Greek word that means strength or prowess.
It’s part of a growing study of quicker expressive works. As an artist, I'm interested in how we hold our energy, and what it means to move through the world with presence.”
Painted on 16" x 20" St Cuthbert’s Mill watercolour paper.
