Original Colour Study Ureshii (嬉しい / うれしい)

from £400.00

“I'm happy to share this new piece with you. It's a study in watercolour, ink, markers, coloured pencil and oil pastel. It’s an A3 study in watercolour and mixed media, with a composition shaped by a loose and playful approach.

The painting is titled Ureshii (嬉しい / うれしい) - a Japanese word meaning happiness. It’s often used to describe the sudden joy you feel when something unexpected lifts your heart. It can mean happy, glad, or delighted. Said on its own, Ureshii! is like saying, I’m so happy!

That fleeting spark of joy is what I wanted to capture in this piece. It feels especially fitting here, with the horse’s moment of interaction with butterflies.

This work is part of a new collection where I’m exploring joy, spontaneity, and the small moments that happen when we stop holding back. I’ve been thinking a lot about presence, connection, and play in my practice at the moment.”

Painted on A3 St Cuthbert’s Mill watercolour paper.
